Lightning protection system testing

A lightning protection system is tested every five years, under the same Annex 1 to the Rulebook on the use of electrical installations and equipment as protective earthing. Because the intervals coincide, the two tests are usually performed in a single visit. Technical inspection and periodic testing of these systems fall within the scope of accreditation IT-127.

How the process works

  1. Documentation review

    We review the design documentation for the installation and any previous reports.

  2. Visual inspection

    Air terminations, down conductors, joints and test points — the most common findings are corrosion and a broken joint.

  3. Measurements

    Earth electrode resistance and system continuity, using METREL instruments.

  4. Report

    An accredited report with findings and opinion, usually issued together with the protective earthing report.

Frequently asked questions

How often must a lightning protection system be tested?

Every five years, per Annex 1 to the Rulebook on the use of electrical installations and equipment (Official Gazette of RM no. 140/2010, amended by no. 54/2011) — the same interval as protective earthing.

Can both tests be done together?

Yes, and it is advisable. The intervals coincide, so both tests are performed in a single visit, reducing cost and disruption.

What if the building has no lightning protection system?

Whether one is required is determined by a lightning risk assessment for the specific building, based on its use, location and contents. Testing applies to an installed system.
